Call it a case of nervousness on the first day of class, a failure to study hard or a bunch of students in over their heads. Whatever the case on Wednesday’s “American Idol,” the top 12 men arrived for their first live show test and promptly flunked. At least, most of them did, especially when compared to the top 12 women the previous evening. So, who surprised us, who disappointed us and who’s in danger of going home? ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances

Excellent

Casey James: The judges predictably continued to milk the Kara-hearts-Casey storyline, which besides getting a bit tired, is starting to be unfair to the singer who called himself “just some dude.” Drop the manufactured drama, because with his stripped-down acoustic take on Bryan Adams’ “Heaven,” James established himself as a front-runner. He alone among the male contestants looked natural onstage. He alone injected a sense of live show verve to the dull proceedings. He alone deserves two gold stars.

Andrew Garcia: By now, Garcia’s shtick has become clear: He takes a pop tune and turns it inside out. The judges were not impressed by his remix of Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar We’re Going Down,” but it hardly deserved such vociferous hate from them. If anything, Simon and his crew seem to be knocking down a front-runner just so that he might rise from the ashes later in the season. Make no mistake: Garcia is still the singer to beat this season.

Todrick Hall: Hall took the judges’ instruction to be creative and ran with it … possibly off a cliff. It’s never good when words used to describe a performance include “murder,” “torture” and “verging on stupid.” But you know what? Veteran singer Elton John says fame is a curse and it kills.

John admits the thought of becoming a famous musician was very attractive when he was starting out, but now it has lost its appeal as it cost him his friends.

“Princess Diana, Gianni Versace, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, all dead. Two of them shot outside their houses. None of this would have happened if they hadn’t been famous,” dailystar.co.uk quoted him as saying.

“Fame attracts lunatics.”

Canadian American Business Council Celebrates U.S./Canada Relations

With the world’s eye focused on Vancouver for the Winter Olympics, the Canadian American Business Council (CABC) is focusing less on the athletic competition between the U.S. and Canada, and more on the partnership between the two nations.

“In the spirit of the Olympics, it is important to take a moment to recognize not only the friendly competition among countries, but also the mutually beneficial partnerships that exist around the world,” said Kelly Johnston, the Chairman of CABC and Vice President of Government Affairs for Campbell Soup Company. “In these times of unprecedented economic challenges, it is important to understand that Canada and the U.S. are uniquely interconnected in a way that supports millions of jobs in each country. The Olympics provide us with a rare opportunity to show that.”

To highlight this, an ad will be running on WRC-TV NBC 4 in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area and throughout Canada to celebrate the integrated nature of the two economies. Specifically, the ad shows that Canada and the US share the world’s largest trading relationship; America exports more to Canada than to all EU countries combined; and Canada is America’s largest energy provider.

“Research has shown that American voters want to continue free trade with Canada to create jobs,” said Maryscott Greenwood, Executive Director for the CABC. “We hope that the Olympics will be an opportunity for Americans and Canadians to see once again the special nature of the relationship between these two countries.”

In August of 2009, the CABC conducted polling of a random nationally representative sample of 800 U.S. registered voters, aged 18 and older. The poll found that 61% of registered voters supported free trade policies with Canada.

With his penchant for top hats, we suppose this was inevitable: T-Pain is getting his own animated special.

On March 7, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim will premiere “Freaknik: The Musical,” an hour-long extravaganza detailing a group of kids’ quest to “successfully resurrect the spirit of Freaknik … the biggest spring-break party known to man.”

According to a Cartoon Network press release, T-Pain — who is also listed as an executive producer on the show — will voice “a party ghost” (no word on whether he’ll use Auto-Tune). Other musicians lending their voices to “Freaknik” include Lil Wayne, Big Boi, Rick Ross, Kelis, Snoop Dogg, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Comedians Andy Samberg and Bill Hader also appear.

“Back in the ’90s, Freaknik was Atlanta’s version of the ultimate block party. It was Mardi Gras-meets-spring break, at your crazy cousin’s bachelor party, and anything could happen,” T-Pain said in a statement. “A decade later, I’m bringing it back for people like me, who didn’t get to experience it the first time around. We’ve recreated Freaknik’s vibe and energy with amazing animation, new music and an all-star cast of characters.”

Pain isn’t the first hip-hop star to team up with Cartoon Network. In 2006, Outkast’s Andre 3000 produced “Class of 3000,” an animated series set in Atlanta’s Westley School of Performing Arts. And Danger Mouse and MF Doom released an album and EP — 2005’s The Mouse and the Mask and ’06’s Occult Hymn — that featured beats taken from Adult Swim programming (and more than a few cameos by Adult Swim stars).

“Freaknik: The Musical” flights from Karratha to Melbourne (All Airports) premieres March 7 at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network.
